Worth ruling out first

Short, broken or missing hair around the perimeter, usually from tight styles, buns, braids or hats pulling on the same spot day after day.
What it looks like
A thin or bare band following your hairline round the sides and back, with short broken hairs rather than smooth skin.
What to do about it
Take the tension off first or nothing else will hold. Then feed the follicle and protect it overnight. Edges take their time, so judge this one in months.
One thing to check for
Run a finger along the bare edge. If the skin is smooth and shiny with no tiny pores in it, the follicles have scarred over and no oil will reopen them. Get that looked at early, because catching it stops it spreading.
Isolated
Round bald patches
Smooth, coin-sized circles of nothing, with normal hair right up to the edge, often appearing over a few weeks. That is alopecia areata, and it is autoimmune.
What it looks like
One or more clean round patches of bare skin. The edge is sharp rather than gradual, and the skin inside looks normal.
What to do about it
Nothing on our shelf treats this and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It needs a diagnosis and usually a prescription. The follicle is alive underneath, so hair often comes back once it is treated.
